Marketing teams are buying dashboards that answer one question: *when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or an AI Overview about our category, do we show up - and who shows up instead?*

That category went from empty to crowded in under two years. The tools look different. The core loop does not.

You give the product a list of buyer questions. It runs those questions through AI engines on a schedule. It reports whether your brand was cited with a link, mentioned without one, or beaten by a named competitor.

If you shop by “most engines on the pricing page,” you will overpay for confident numbers about the wrong prompts. If you shop by **job**, then freeze a prompt set and demand sample discipline, the tracker becomes useful. The dashboard still does not write the fix. That is a content and authority system - with approval gates.

This post is the buyer matrix plus the BuildWire operating system that sits on top of whatever you pick. It complements our [5 loops for AEO + GEO](https://buildwire.ai/blog/5-loops-to-stay-visible-in-ai-answers-aeo-geo/) (how to stay visible once you can measure) and [what llms.txt is and is not](https://buildwire.ai/blog/what-is-llms-txt-for-marketers-and-what-it-is-not/) (an agent map is not a visibility score).

## The five-second rule

Ask what must exist when you are done.

| You need… | Prefer… | Why |
| -------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| A real number this month on a tight budget | **Budget tracker** (e.g. Otterly-class) | Core engines, self-serve, enough to start |
| Multi-brand / agency seats without per-person pain | **Agency / mid-market tracker** (e.g. Peec-class) | Seats and brand count matter more than depth |
| Broad engine coverage and enterprise workflows | **Breadth tracker** (e.g. Scrunch-class) | Compare current packaging and engine access before buying |
| Board-level reporting, export, governance | **Enterprise tracker** (e.g. Profound-class) | Analyst workflows, SSO/RBAC, custom contracts |
| Baseline before any SaaS bill | **First-party + free checks** | GSC / Bing / Cloudflare / manual prompt log |
| A change you can trust week to week | **Any tool + sample rules** | One run ≠ a ranking |

## What all trackers actually do

Strip the marketing. Every serious AI visibility platform runs the same loop:

1. Load prompts (you chose them, or the tool suggested them).
2. Query one or more answer engines on a schedule.
3. Score mention / citation / share of voice vs competitors.
4. Optionally show which URLs were used as sources.

Public comparisons (for example [AI SEO Shift’s Otterly vs Peec vs Profound vs Scrunch](https://aiseoshift.com/blog/otterly-vs-peec-vs-profound-vs-scrunch/?ref=buildwire.ai)) keep landing on the same conclusion: the technology is not the differentiator. **Team size, seats, engine breadth, and governance** are.

[Exploding Topics’ side-by-side thread](https://x.com/explodingtopics/status/2094488957643882958?ref=buildwire.ai) makes the sharper buyer point: more models pointed at prompts nobody asks is worse than fewer models pointed at real ones. The buying question is whether **coverage and prompt research** live in the same product - not who wins a feature bingo card.

## Decision matrix (by job)

Prices and plan names move. Treat the table as a **stage map**, then re-check vendor pages before you sign. Figures below follow the Aug 2026 public comparison and the Exploding Topics thread - not a BuildWire paid trial.

| Job-to-be-done | Strong fit (class) | Watch-outs |
| --------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Solo / small team, start measuring now | **Otterly-class** (\~$29/mo entry; core ChatGPT / Perplexity / Copilot / AI Overviews; Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Mode are add-ons on the Lite plan) | Prompt-volume caps and add-on pricing for some engines; less analyst depth |
| Agency or mid-market, several brands, many humans | **Peec-class** (public comps stress unlimited seats; mid-tier monthly bands; language breadth) | Model caps / add-on pricing per engine in some plans (Exploding Topics called out 3-platform caps + per-model add-ons) |
| Need broad engine coverage and enterprise workflows | **Scrunch-class** (broad coverage; acquired by Sitecore in 2026) | Scrunch says it remains a standalone platform; confirm current packaging and engine access before buying |
| Enterprise SOV, prompt volumes, exports, SSO | **Profound-class** (enterprise / custom; deepest analytics narrative in public comps) | Overkill for a one-person experiment; procurement time |
| Already pay for SEO suite | **Suite add-ons** (Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush AI Visibility, SE Ranking, etc.; see [@shanni\_talks’ 2026 list](https://x.com/shanni%5Ftalks/status/2101010995032547730?ref=buildwire.ai)) | Platform-by-platform pricing can stack high (Exploding Topics cited Ahrefs full lineup at $699/mo *on top of* SEO) |
| No budget yet | **First-party** (Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Cloudflare AI Analytics, PostHog where relevant) + a spreadsheet of 20–30 buyer prompts run weekly | Incomplete; still beats buying a dashboard before you have prompts |

Also keep free / lightweight auditors on the radar as *checks*, not as your only system of record - Show HN-style tools keep appearing (Website Auditor, free visibility apps, MCP bridges into Claude/Codex). Useful for a smoke test. Not a substitute for a frozen prompt set and a named weekly owner.

## The part vendors under-sell: sample discipline

Answer engines reshuffle. Community operators keep saying the quiet part out loud.

In [an r/aiseo\_tips discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/aiseo%5Ftips/comments/1vzliya/top%5F7%5Fai%5Fvisibility%5Ftrackers%5Ffor%5Fagencies%5F2026/?ref=buildwire.ai), one commenter reported running the **same 20 prompts against one model three times in an afternoon** and watching the brand list move on nearly half of them. Their buyer question for any tracker: **how many samples per prompt before a change is called real?**

If your vendor cannot answer that, you are buying a screenshot machine.

Before you renew anything, write three rules in the SOPs:

1. **Frozen prompt set.** 20–40 questions real buyers ask (category, comparison, pricing, “best for X”). Version it in git or a shared doc. Do not let the tool’s demo prompts become your strategy.
2. **Minimum samples.** Agree N runs or N days before a week-over-week “drop” becomes an action.
3. **Editable sources only.** When a citation appears, ask: can we change that URL? If the engine cites a directory you do not own, the fix is PR / partnerships / new pages - not another dashboard tile.

Same brand, different engines, different scores is normal. One “AI ranking” number for the board without engine labels is how you get fake certainty.

## First-party before SaaS (cheap week)

Do this in one afternoon before you demo four vendors:

1. Export GSC queries and landing pages for 90 days. Run them through [GSC Data Interpreter](https://buildwire.ai/claude-skills/gsc-data-interpreter/) for patterns - not as a fake AEO score.
2. Write 25 buyer prompts. Put them in a sheet with columns: prompt, engine, date, mentioned Y/N, cited URL, competitor named, notes.
3. Run the sheet manually once on ChatGPT + Perplexity + one AI Overview check. You now have a baseline the sales demo cannot distort.
4. Only then trial 1–2 trackers on **that same prompt list**.

If your team will not maintain the sheet for two weeks, they will not maintain the SaaS either.

## After the tracker: the BuildWire operating system

Buying a tracker only starts the work. When it says a competitor wins “best X for Y,” none of these tools ship the page.

Use a weekly propose / review loop (same posture as our [measurement desk](https://buildwire.ai/blog/claude-marketing-write-access-measurement-desk/)):

1. **READ** \- tracker export + GSC export + the frozen prompt set.
2. **Cluster** \- group gaps with [Topical Authority Planner](https://buildwire.ai/claude-skills/topical-authority-planner/). Kill cannibalization with [Content Cannibalization Detector](https://buildwire.ai/claude-skills/content-cannibalization-detector/) when two URLs fight one prompt.
3. **Rewrite for answers** \- [AEO Answer Engine Optimizer](https://buildwire.ai/claude-skills/aeo-answer-engine-optimizer/) and [GEO Content Optimizer](https://buildwire.ai/claude-skills/geo-content-optimizer/) on the priority URLs.
4. **Schema that matches the page** \- [Schema Tag Generator](https://buildwire.ai/claude-skills/schema-tag-generator/). No fantasy FAQ markup.
5. **Comparison / alternatives** \- [Competitor Pages SEO](https://buildwire.ai/claude-skills/competitor-pages-seo/) when category prompts consistently name someone else.
6. **Approval gate** \- SEO or content lead marks ship / revise / need-more-evidence. Then a human (or a gated write path) publishes.
7. **Optional agent glue** \- schedule the export and Slack ping with n8n; run the Skills in Claude or Claude Code. See [n8n vs Claude Code vs Claude Skills](https://buildwire.ai/blog/n8n-vs-claude-code-vs-claude-skills-marketing-ops/).

llms.txt and answer-ready pages help agents find you. They do not replace measurement. Measurement does not replace publishing. Keep the layers separate.

## How to run a fair vendor trial

1. Load **your** 20–30 prompts, not the demo set.
2. Compare **source URLs**, not only the headline visibility %.
3. Do the **per-seat math** for your real headcount (unlimited seats can beat a cheap sticker price).
4. Ask about **historical export** before an annual contract.
5. Ask for **sample count per prompt** and how they treat non-deterministic reshuffles.
6. Time-box: two weeks, one owner, one decision memo. No parallel four-vendor science fair without a written rubric.

## What this post is not

- Not a claim we ran a paid 30-day bake-off across Profound / Peec / Otterly / Scrunch this week.
- Not an endorsement of any vendor’s funding round, valuation, or “best overall” trophy.
- Not a redo of the AEO/GEO loops post - that piece is the system after you can measure.
- Not a promise that any tracker increases citations. Trackers report; content and authority earn.
- Not a Creative Desk / Skills-pack tour. Skills are linked as the remediation layer.

## Start Monday

1. Freeze 25 buyer prompts in a shared doc.
2. Run a first-party baseline (manual + GSC).
3. Pick **one** tracker class from the matrix that matches your team stage.
4. Install the Skills above (or the [SEO Skills Pack](https://buildwire.ai/claude-skills/seo-skills-pack/)).
5. Every week: READ gaps → PROPOSE page/schema fixes → human APPROVE → publish → re-sample.

Systems over slogans. The winning stack is a boring prompt list, honest samples, and a gate before anything goes live.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does an AI visibility tracker measure?

It runs selected buyer prompts through supported AI answer engines and records brand mentions, citations, cited URLs, competitors, and changes over time. The exact engines and sampling method vary by product.

### Which AI visibility tracker is best for a small team?

Start with the job, prompt allowance, engine coverage, and reporting needs rather than a universal winner. A lower-cost tracker may be enough for a small frozen prompt set, while multi-brand teams may care more about workspaces, seats, and exports.

### Why does sample count matter for AI visibility tracking?

AI answers can change between runs. A single response may reflect normal variation rather than a meaningful visibility change, so teams should ask how many samples or days support each reported movement.

### Can an AI visibility tracker improve citations by itself?

No. A tracker reports gaps and cited sources. Teams still need to review the evidence, update or create useful pages, add matching structured data where appropriate, earn relevant mentions, and measure again.
