What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO (search engine optimization) earns rankings in search results. AEO (answer engine optimization) shapes content so answer surfaces such as featured snippets, AI Overviews and voice assistants can lift a direct answer from it. GEO (generative engine optimization) makes content easy for generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini to find, trust and cite. All three rest on the same base: pages that are crawlable, clear and backed by evidence.
Why it matters now: Ahrefs found that, in December 2025 data, a Google AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranked page. Pew Research found that people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when none did. Being the source an AI answer quotes is now part of being found.
One base, three surfaces.
Google's Search Central documentation says there are no extra technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond normal Search eligibility. The guide builds on that: get the base right, then shape it for each surface.
SEO foundation
E-E-A-T signals, schema markup that matches visible content, entity coverage, and page structure that works for people and machines. GEO SEO starts here.
AEO: answer engine optimization
Direct answers under question headings, definitions in plain sentences, FAQ sections and formatting that answer surfaces and AI Overviews can lift.
GEO: generative engine optimization
Sourced facts, clear authorship, consistent brand facts across the web, and a method to check where ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini cite you. Some teams call this LLM SEO.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO shapes content so answer surfaces such as featured snippets and AI Overviews can lift a direct answer. GEO makes content easy for generative tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini to find, trust and cite.
How do I rank in AI Overviews?
Start with normal SEO eligibility: the page must be indexed and allowed to show a snippet. Google says there is no special markup. Then answer the question directly under a matching heading, use specific facts and keep the page current.
What is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is another name for generative engine optimization: making your pages easy for large language model tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini to retrieve, trust and cite.
Do I need technical skills?
No. The guide includes both technical and non-technical paths. If you can edit a website or brief a developer, you can apply it.
How do I get cited by ChatGPT?
Make sure OpenAI's search crawler can reach your pages, publish clear answers with specific, sourced facts, and earn mentions on sites ChatGPT already cites. Then test buyer questions in a fresh chat and record whether you are named. The guide includes a measurement framework for this.
Does SEO still matter if AI answers take clicks?
Yes. AI Overviews and many AI tools draw on pages that are already indexed and trusted, so SEO remains the base for AEO and GEO.
