HubSpot just made AEO Sensor free. ChatGPT referral traffic is at a 12-month low. Google AI Overviews now appear in 50% of US searches. Marketers who treat answer engine visibility as a 2027 problem are already invisible to 42% of their buyers.

Here is a seven-step audit you can run this week. No paid tools required. Works for SaaS, ecommerce, agencies, and solo founders.

Step 1: Set Your Baseline (30 minutes)

Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity in three browser tabs. Run the 10 most important buyer queries for your business in all three. Examples:

  • "What is the best [your category] for [your customer]?"
  • "How do I [problem your product solves]?"
  • "[Your competitor] vs alternatives"
  • "Top [your category] tools in 2026"

Run each query 3 times. Record whether your brand appears, what the AI says, and which sources it cites. This is your baseline.

Step 2: Audit Your Robots.txt and Crawl Access

The fastest way to be invisible to AI is to block the bots that feed them. Check that your robots.txt allows:

  • GPTBot (OpenAI)
  • ClaudeBot (Anthropic)
  • OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search index)
  • PerplexityBot
  • Google-Extended (Gemini training)

If you see "Disallow: /" for any of these, fix it today. While you are there, submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools. ChatGPT reads Bing's index, so being absent from Bing means being absent from ChatGPT search.

Step 3: Rewrite Your Top 10 Pages With Answer-First Structure

AI engines pull short, self-contained answers. Long, build-up-heavy content gets skipped. Open your top 10 pages by traffic and rewrite the first paragraph using this template:

[Direct answer in 40-60 words.] [One sentence of context.] [One sentence pointing to what the rest of the page covers.]

Then run the "Island Test": each paragraph should make sense in isolation. If a section starts with "It," "This," or "They," replace the pronoun with the actual subject. AI quotes paragraphs, not whole pages.

Step 4: Add Schema Markup (the 88% Opportunity)

Only 12% of websites use schema markup. That is your easiest competitive advantage. At minimum, add:

  • FAQPage schema on FAQ sections and product pages with common questions
  • Article schema on blog posts and guides, with dateModified always current
  • Organization schema on your About page (founder, founded, location, sameAs links to LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2)
  • Product schema with pricing, ratings, and reviews if you sell anything

Use a free generator like Schema App or Merkle's tool. Validate with Google's Rich Results Test.

Step 5: Build Entity Consistency Across the Web

AI engines stitch together your brand identity from many sources. Conflicts confuse them. Open a spreadsheet and audit how your brand is described on:

  • Your website (homepage, About, footer)
  • LinkedIn company page
  • Crunchbase
  • G2, Capterra, TrustPilot
  • Wikipedia (if you have a page)
  • Industry directories

Standardise: same founding year, same one-line description, same category, same founder names. The goal is one clean entity record across the internet.

Step 6: Build Off-Site Footprint Where AI Looks

AI engines do not just read your site. They cite Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube, Quora, and industry publications. For the next 30 days:

  • Post one weekly thread on LinkedIn answering a top buyer query
  • Drop a thoughtful comment on three relevant Reddit threads per week (no link drops)
  • Publish one YouTube video answering a "how to" query in your niche
  • Pitch one guest post per month to a publication AI engines cite (HubSpot, SaaStr, Search Engine Land, your industry's top blog)

The more places your brand appears as a credible source, the more often AI engines surface it.

Step 7: Set Up Monthly AI Citation Tracking

You cannot improve what you do not measure. Set up three lightweight tracking systems:

  • HubSpot AEO Sensor: bookmark the dashboard, check the daily volatility score every Monday
  • Manual query log: re-run your 10 baseline queries on the 1st of every month, track which now mention your brand
  • GA4 filter: create a custom segment for AI referral sources (chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, claude.ai)

After 90 days, you will have a clear picture of which moves changed your citation rate and which did not.

💡 Key insight: AEO rewards clarity, consistency, and presence in the places AI engines already read. Most of this audit is about cleaning up what you already have, not building something new. The brands that get cited in May 2026 will be the ones that did this audit in May 2026, not the ones that wait for "the right tool."
