What it is

Anthropic offers two ways to build with Claude agents. Claude Managed Agents is a pre-built agent system you configure with a model, system prompt, tools and MCP servers. It runs in a cloud or self-hosted sandbox. It supports long-running tasks, scheduled deployments on a cron schedule, web search, bash, file tools and multiagent orchestration. The Claude Agent SDK is a library for building your own agent loop with Claude Code's tools. Both are billed at standard Claude API rates, with no separate SDK fee.

Honest limits

Claude Managed Agents is in beta. It is not currently eligible for Zero Data Retention or HIPAA BAA.
Billed at standard Claude API rates. Costs scale with usage and session length.
On the Anthropic-managed sandbox, Anthropic runs the infrastructure. Teams with data-residency rules need the self-hosted sandbox, which they run themselves.
The Claude Agent SDK requires a developer to build and maintain the agent loop.
