What is MCP?
MCP is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 that standardizes how AI systems connect to external tools, data sources, and applications. Think of it like USB-C for AI: instead of building custom integrations for every AI-tool pairing, developers build once using MCP, and it works everywhere.
Before MCP, connecting an AI agent to Google Drive required custom code. Connecting it to Slack? Different custom code. Connecting to Notion? More custom code. MCP replaces this fragmented mess with a single, universal protocol.
Why does this matter for marketers?
- Your AI tools are about to get much more connected. Claude can already access Slack, Canva, and Box through MCP. OpenAI adopted it in March 2025. Google DeepMind confirmed support. Every major AI player is converging on this standard.
- AI agents can now "see" your entire business. MCP allows agents to pull context from multiple sources—your CRM, your files, your calendar—and act on it coherently. No more copy-pasting data between tools.
- The open ecosystem means faster innovation. There are already 1,000+ community-built MCP servers. Tools like LangChain and Hugging Face have integrated it. New connections will keep appearing without waiting for official partnerships.
What should you do?
- Ask vendors about MCP support. When evaluating AI tools, check if they support MCP. This is becoming a key differentiator.
- Start experimenting with connected workflows. Tools like Claude (with Apps enabled) let you test what it's like to have an AI that actually interacts with your stack.
- Watch for "MCP servers" in your category. As more marketing tools build MCP integrations, you'll be able to chain them together into true multi-step automations.
MCP won't be something you think about daily—just like you don't think about USB-C when you plug in your phone. But it's the infrastructure that will make AI agents actually useful in real business workflows.
