ChatGPT's new "Dreaming" memory (story #3 above) changes how the tool works in a quiet but big way. It now builds a living picture of who you are in the background and keeps it current on its own. Left alone, it fills up with whatever you happen to type. Set up on purpose, it turns ChatGPT into an assistant that walks into every conversation already knowing your business, your voice, and your customers. Here is the 20-minute setup, and it works for any business, not just marketing.

Step 1: Audit what it already knows

Open Settings > Personalization > Memory and read the memory summary page. This is ChatGPT's current model of you.

  • Read it like a stranger would. Is it accurate? Is it useful?
  • Notice how much of it is one-off questions that do not represent your real work. That is the noise you are about to clear out.

Step 2: Prune the noise

A lean memory beats a bloated one. The model weighs whatever is stored, so junk dilutes the signal.

  • Delete anything stale, wrong, or irrelevant: finished projects, throwaway questions, personal trivia that has no place in a work account.
  • Keep only what you would want it to use on your behalf next week.

Step 3: Seed the high-value context

Do not wait for ChatGPT to guess who you are. Tell it directly, once, in a single message. Copy the block below, fill in the brackets, and paste it into a fresh chat.

Please save the following to memory as my standing context:
- Who I am: [name], [role] at [company]. I focus on
[what you do].
- My business: We sell [product/service] to [ideal customer].
Our edge is [differentiator].
- My customers: [primary audience], who care most about
[top 2-3 priorities].
- My voice: [3 adjectives, e.g. clear, direct, no jargon].
Avoid [words or phrases you dislike].
- My recurring work: Each week I [main repeating tasks,
e.g. write a newsletter, plan campaigns, review ad data].
- My tools: [main stack, e.g. Shopify, Meta Ads, Beehiiv, Notion].
From now on, default to this context when you help me,
unless I say otherwise.

Step 4: Set your topic boundaries

The update added controls for which topics ChatGPT should raise and when. Use them.

  • If you run work and personal life through one account, tell it to keep personal topics out of work threads.
  • This is also your privacy lever. For a sensitive project, tell it not to remember that thread at all.

Step 5: Put it on a monthly cadence

  • Once a month, reopen the memory summary, prune what drifted, and re-seed anything that changed: a new product, a new ideal customer, a new positioning.
  • Ten minutes a month keeps your AI chief of staff sharp instead of slowly going stale.
💡 Key insight: The people who get the most out of AI in 2026 will not be the ones with the cleverest prompts. They will be the ones whose AI already knows the most about their business before they type a word. Memory is quietly becoming the moat. Build yours on purpose.
